Question 1.
Is a box spring needed for use with these bunk beds?
A box spring is not required for use with these bunk beds. Any standard innerspring mattress—ideally between 8 and 12 inches thick—will fit comfortably on the sturdy frame and provided slats. This makes setup easy and maintains the proper clearance between beds. Just pick your favorite mattress brand, add it to the frame, and you're good to go—no extra foundation needed!
Question 2.
What are the dimensions of the different staircase options available for bunk beds?
For those considering a staircase instead of the standard integrated ladder, we offer two primary staircase configurations, each designed for specific bed heights:
These sturdy staircases are crafted for both safety and convenience, making it easy to climb in and out of your bed, no matter the room layout. If you need guidance on which configuration works for your needs—or if you’re interested in custom stairs—just let us know when ordering.
Question 3.
What design and functional benefits do bunk beds offer to interior designers?
Bunk beds aren’t just practical—they’re a designer’s secret weapon for making the most of tight quarters without sacrificing style. Thanks to their vertical orientation, they open up valuable floor space for desks, comfy chairs, or even that vintage rug you’ve had your eye on. Whether you’re sprucing up a teen’s retreat or outfitting a guest room for max versatility, bunk beds deliver twice the sleeping space and double the design possibilities.
Flexibility is a huge plus here. Bunk beds adapt to a range of themes and room sizes, from minimalist city lofts to cozy mountain cabins. Interior designers often choose bunk beds to create functional nooks in small apartments or trendy layouts in modern homes. And since these beds come in a range of sizes and configurations, it’s easy to tailor them to meet specific style and space requirements.
Above all, bunk beds keep a room feeling open and effortlessly organized—a combination that makes any design project shine.
Question 4.
What options are available to use memory foam mattresses with bunk beds?
Many folks like the idea of swapping in a memory foam mattress for that just-right combination of comfort and support. If that's your plan, you’ll want to create a solid base for the mattress—otherwise, it’ll sink between the slats, and that’s no fun for anyone.
To solve this, we offer a couple of easy options:
Both options can be added as Accessories when you’re building your custom bunk bed package.
And if you’d rather not hunt down a mattress elsewhere, we can also provide custom-sized memory foam mattresses in your choice of firmness. Just let us know your firmness preference in the comment section during checkout and we’ll make it to order.
If you have another specialized mattress in mind, or plan to use a proprietary sleep system like Purple, Tempur-Pedic, or Casper, we can adjust the slats or materials to suit—just jot down the details in your order notes.
Question 5.
What custom-made memory foam mattress options are available, and how can they be ordered?
To make sure your new bunk bed offers the restful sleep you deserve, we’ve curated a custom-made 10-inch memory foam mattress designed to fit your bed exactly—no more wrestling with awkward standard sizes.
You aren’t locked into a one-size-fits-all feel, either. These mattresses come with five firmness levels:
Each mattress features removable and adjustable interior layers, so you can fine-tune your comfort level at home. In fact, you can arrange the layers in up to nine unique configurations, ensuring you can dial in the perfect support—whether you’re a side sleeper, back sleeper, or need extra firmness after a long day.
By default, if you add a mattress as an accessory when ordering your bunk bed, it will arrive in a Medium firmness. Prefer something different? Just let us know your preferred firmness in the Special Instructions section during checkout, and we’ll make sure it’s made just for you.
Mattresses can be added while building your bunk bed order, or purchased separately if you need an upgrade down the road. A perfect fit for custom sleeping comfort—no guessing, no compromises.
Question 6.
Can customers receive free color samples of bed finishes before purchasing?

You can easily add any important delivery details in the Special Instructions box during checkout to ensure your order arrives smoothly.
Question 8.
How are bunk beds packaged for delivery?
How Your Bunk Bed Ships
For ease of transport and setup, each bunk bed is carefully packed and shipped in seven clearly labeled boxes. If you’ve ordered any accessories, those will arrive in their own separate packages alongside your main shipment. This organized approach ensures that all components reach you safely and are easy to manage on delivery day.
Question 9.
What is the default firmness when ordering a mattress as an accessory, and can it be changed?
Mattress Firmness Options
When you add a mattress as an accessory to your bunk bed order, it will be provided in a standard Medium firmness—ideal for most sleepers and a perfect companion for college, guest, or family use. Prefer something a bit softer or firmer? Simply specify your firmness preference in the Special Instructions box during checkout and we’ll tailor your mattress just for you.
Question 10.
How many ways can the mattress be arranged to achieve the best comfort?
Q: How many ways can the mattress be arranged to achieve the best comfort?
A: You’ll have up to nine different configurations to play with, depending on your preferences. Whether you like your mattress a little firmer, a touch softer, or somewhere in between, you can set it up in the way that works best for you. Just experiment until you find the setup that feels just right.
Question 11.
How did bunk beds contribute to a vacation home winning Vacation Home of the Year from Vrbo?
When it comes to creating a standout vacation rental, little details—like smart sleeping arrangements—can make a big difference. In one shining example, a desert getaway clinched the prestigious Vacation Home of the Year title from Vrbo, thanks in part to its choice of spacious queen-over-queen bunk beds.
These oversized bunks proved to be a game changer for the property. By adding comfortable sleeping options without crowding the rooms, the home could host larger groups and multi-generational families with ease. Guests raved about having plenty of personal space in a fun, hotel-style layout—something you just don’t find in the typical rental. The flexibility to accommodate everyone from couples to kids, while keeping the living areas open and inviting, earned the home glowing reviews and repeat bookings.
It’s proof that with the right furniture, you can elevate an ordinary rental into an award-winning retreat and keep guests coming back year after year.
Question 12.
Can the interior layers of the mattresses be adjusted or rearranged for different comfort preferences?
Looking to fine-tune your comfort level? The mattresses designed for this bunk bed feature removable and adjustable interior layers. Simply unzip and rearrange the layers inside your mattress to create the ideal firmness or softness to your liking—a total of up to nine unique configurations are possible. This lets you personalize the feel of each bed, accommodating different preferences for you or your guests with ease.
Question 13.
What firmness levels are available for custom-made 10-inch memory foam mattresses?
If you're ordering a custom 10-inch memory foam mattress, you'll have your pick of firmness levels to best suit your comfort needs. Choices include: Soft, Medium Soft, Medium, Medium Firm, or Firm. That way you can choose something plush and cloudlike, or go for firmer support—whatever fits your sleep style. Just select the option that works best for you when completing your order.
Question 14.
Why did Better Homes & Gardens recognize a Queen Over Queen Bunk Bed as the best for adults?
It’s not just us singing the praises of a solidly built Queen over Queen bunk bed—editors at Better Homes & Gardens have taken notice, too. Their shoutout comes down to a few big factors:
Grown-Up Comfort: The spacious queen size on both levels means real room for adults—not just kids. Whether you’re outfitting a guest room, rental, or a shared space, no one has to compromise on mattress size or legroom.
Heavy-Duty Construction: Unlike flimsy alternatives, this style is recognized for its robust framework and substantial weight capacity—no worries about creaks or wobbles, even with nightly use. It’s engineered with stability in mind, supporting the needs of adults without sacrificing style.
Maximized Space: Queen over Queen bunks are a blessing in apartments, cabins, or anywhere square footage is at a premium. They offer the practicality of two adult beds in the footprint of one, all without skimping on quality.
Modern Appeal: Clean lines and a purposeful, contemporary look make these bunks as attractive as they are functional—no need to sacrifice aesthetics for space.
It’s simple: the blend of thoughtful design, extra-strong materials, and real adult comfort is why this configuration gets top marks from trusted sources.
Question 15.
Why did The Spruce name certain adult bunk beds the best customizable bunk bed of 2024?
So, why did The Spruce call these the "Best Customizable Bunk Bed" of 2024? It really comes down to flexibility and craftsmanship. The beds are built every which way—twin, full, or queen, with lengths to match whatever your ceiling and mattress can handle. You need taller legs? We cut them. Prefer an extra shelf or want to adjust the ladder? We’re on it.
But it doesn’t stop at measurements. You’re choosing everything from unfinished premium Douglas Fir to the last bolt—giving you a bunk bed that feels like it actually belongs in your space, not just something squeezed in. This level of tailor-made design, paired with a heavy weight capacity and rock-solid construction, caught The Spruce’s eye for good reason.
In other words: you’re not just getting a place to sleep—you’re getting exactly what you want, for whatever your needs are right now, and down the road.

The bunk set up looks great and the drawers are wonderful. Mattress Guidelines and Options
Our bunk beds are designed to accommodate standard innerspring mattresses, and we recommend using mattresses with a thickness of 8-12 inches. No box spring is required—just the mattress itself.
Memory Foam Users:
If you’re planning to use a memory foam mattress, you’ll want to ensure a flat surface to prevent the mattress from dipping between slats. We offer two solutions:
Both options can be selected as accessories when customizing your bed.
Note: If you need a specific firmness or type of mattress, you’re welcome to use any brand that fits within the recommended thickness. When in doubt, let us know your preferences and we’ll help you configure the setup that works best for your space and comfort.
Q: Hi! I am looking at the brute solid wood twin bunk beds. Would the 69 inch frame work for a ceiling heigh of 9-0 inches if I use a thin mattress or would i need to adjust? The top bed would be used much less frequently so I'd like to maximize space on the bottom bunk and stick to the minimum up top. Also, your site says: "We assume you will use an 8 In. Mattress which will give you a clearance of about 55 In. For the 69 In."
Does that mean 55 inches from the top of the mattress on the bottom bunk to the bottom of the top bunk frame?
Please help me customize so I can accommodate a guest as comfortable as possible in the bottom bunk while still having a usable top bunk that will be used less frequently. We could reduce the bottom 14 inch clearance if necessary?
A: If you use a thinner mattress you do not need to adjust. The 55 in is from the bottom of the top mattress to the floor.

Ladders and Staircase Options
If you're looking to access the top bunk, there are a few options to consider besides the standard ladder. The ladder can be detached and positioned anywhere on the bunk bed for convenience. However, keep in mind that if you have different sizes for the top and bottom bunks (for example, a full over a queen), you won't be able to use the side where the bottom bunk extends past the top. The ladder securely clips to the frame and won’t budge when in use.
If you prefer a staircase, a matching wooden staircase can be added for an additional fee. The staircase supports up to 500 lbs and includes open cubbies beneath the steps for extra storage. You can also choose to add a handrail for the staircase as an accessory.
